COVID Symptoms – If sick, stay home and get tested

COVID-19 Self-Monitoring – For Staff, Visitors and Residents in Independent Living

In our Independent Living Apartments (Pavilion, Terrace West, Primrose Gardens), we provided daily Active Screening for COVID-19 from the onset of the pandemic until 14 days after the 2nd dose vaccination clinics in those buildings. Active Screening is when another person asks you the COVID-19 screening questions in-person. This gives them the ability to look at your eyes, your face-color, your countenance in order to add their observations to the screening process.

Residents in Assisted Living and Long-Term Care continue to be screened for COVID-19 symptoms daily. Staff at Menno Place continue to be screened for COVID-19 symptoms daily.

As we’ve entered Step 3 of the BC Restart Program (July 1, 2021), it is important that all Independent Living residents and all visitors to the Menno Place campus practice self-screening and take appropriate action when they have symptoms, even mild, of COVID-19.

What do you do if you have symptoms of COVID-19? Follow the Fraser Health instructions for COVID-testing provided on this website – CLICK HERE.

How do you self-screen to ensure that you are safe to visit at Menno Place? Answer the following questions:

Do you have NEW ONSET of COVID-19-like symptoms? Follow COVID-19 testing instructions if you answer YES. Do not come for a visit.

  • Fever (above 37.8C)
  • Cough
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Sore Throat
  • Loss of sense of smell
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Extreme fatigue or tiredness
  • Body aches
  • Loss of sense of taste
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea

Do you have a risk factor for COVID-19 exposure?

Do not come for a visit if you say YES to any of these (unless an exception is made such as essential workers: long-haul trucker or healthcare worker who crosses the USA/Canada border regularly)

  • In the past 14 days, have you returned from travel outside of Canada?
  • In the past 14 days, have you been in close contact with anyone diagnosed with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19?
  • In the past 14 days, have you lived or worked in a setting that is part of a COVID-19 outbreak?
  • In the past 14 days, were you discharged from an acute care unit in a hospital that is on COVID-19 outbreak?
  • In the past 14 days, have you been advised to self-isolate or quarantine at home by Public Health?

How has Channel 10 benefitted the residents of Menno Place?

For many of the residents at Menno Place, Channel 10 has been a complete lifesaver! In the past 6 months, there have been 140,404 views of the channel!

Channel 10 is Menno TV as it is affectionately known around the campus. In the year prior to COVID, Telus was contracted to provide TV, phone and wi-fi services for the Apartments. The infrastructure was new (Optik) and the result was that we lost our beloved television station (with Shaw) for a period of time. Telus had to find a way to make it possible for us to re-create the television station. In the interim, many of you will remember that the apartments residents were offered a tablet for watching chapel and other shows online.

Just prior to COVID, the new television infrastructure was set up and we were given the opportunity to create content for Channel 10, Menno TV. All content had to be original, so we were not able to show pre-recorded materials from other sources, such as worship videos.

When COVID shut down the Recreation and Chaplaincy programs, we turned to Channel 10 for a safe answer to how we could connect with residents.

For the first time, we created ORIGINAL programming, including morning devotions, lunchtime announcements, Bingo, Exercises, Communion and a paint-along program that happens each week. In many of these programs, residents are provided the materials (paint supplies and communion cups) to participate. For Bingo, the recreation staff call the numbers while the residents dot their bingo cards in their own apartments. When they get BINGO, they call the Rec staff’s cell phone and the first one to call gets a chocolate bar delivered to their home!

In order to fill the days, our team tirelessly downloaded (with permission) church services from resident’s home churches and uploaded them for viewing on Channel 10. There were 14 churches that became regular programming for the residents each week. Along with this, we had live Sunday Service each Sunday morning led by one of our chaplains

We heard how appreciated this channel is for the residents. We heard that there were more people participating in exercise class than was ever happening in real-life classes

Only recently did we receive information from Telus on the viewership of our very own Channel 10. When you read these numbers, you, too, will see how important the television connection was for our residents – your loved ones! Well done, Recreation and Chaplains!

Take a look at the attached images from Telus showing how very important Channel 10 has been to our residents! The day with the highest viewership in the last 6 months was a day when the chaplains hosted televised communion service.

We are grateful for this amazing technology, for the tech team who set up a brand new system of cameras, computer, software and program uploads. To name a few of the team – David Janzen, Danielle Kinvig, our IT Team at Adaptive, the TELUS team including Susan Law and Christine Lambert. Thank you to the Recreation Staff – Timea Derbyshire and Rebecca Popovici as well as the chaplains – Ingrid Schultz, Ingrid Stahl, John Dyck and Scott McKenzie.

Menno Place – Following our safety plan in an unprecedented heatwave

Dear Menno Place Resident/Tenant Families,

In response to the heat wave impacting our region, we have put several measures in place as part of our emergency preparedness plan, to ensure the health and safety of our residents/tenants.

As such, we are closely working with Fraser Health leadership to address heat-related challenges and access support and resources, including relief staff and air conditioning devices.

To protect our residents/tenants, we are proactively monitoring them for signs of heat-related conditions and mitigating their risk in the following ways:

  • Ensuring they are regularly hydrated;
  • Providing cooling cloths;
  • Using ice machines and fans/air conditioning devices;
  • Closing blinds and ensuring residents/tenants are wearing light-weight clothing.

To prevent heat exhaustion among our staff, staff mask and eye protection requirements have been temporarily relaxed given the extreme heat. We have removed the expectation for residents in the apartments to wear masks.

The risk of heat-related dangers to older adults at this time is more imminent than COVID-19 transmission. Thus, sites not experiencing an outbreak can relax certain COVID-19 restrictions at their site, such as grouping residents/tenants in cooling spaces and using fans/air conditioning devices. The relaxation of these restrictions is possible because of the protection residents/tenants/staff have received through widespread vaccination in long-term care and assisted living sites, and the decreased risk of COVID-19 transmission in our community.

We encourage you as families and friends to get vaccinated for COVID-19 in order to keep your loved ones safe. If you have the opportunity to get fully vaccinated (2nd dose + 14 days), you are bringing a significantly high layer of protection to your loved one, other residents and our staff when you visit.

Once the heat warning has ended, we will work with Fraser Health leadership to re-evaluate our approach.

If you have any specific questions about your loved one, please contact the nurse on their unit, or the Manager of Community Enrichment in the Apartments.

Sincerely,

Menno Place Leadership

Relaxing Mask and Goggle wearing for staff and residents during the heatwave

Relaxing the Mask and Goggle wearing for Staff and Residents during Heatwave:

The Public Health guidelines for mask-wearing and goggle wearing have been relaxed for seniors and care homes. This relaxation of mask and goggle protocols is in order to keep residents safe from the heat and to enable staff to do their work effectively during this heatwave.
Residents in the Apartments: We have announced to residents that it is more important that they stay safe from the heatwave than that they wear their mask. This is a temporary measure of relaxed protocols during the heatwave. We will announce the end of this measure when it is appropriate. Residents will follow Public Health protocols in public spaces within the greater community.
Staff: At this time, there is no requirement to wear a mask or goggles unless in direct contact with a resident.
Visitors: There is no change to the visitor requirements to wear a mask during visits. Fraser Health still requires visitors to wear masks while visiting their loved one.

When will this relaxing of the mask and goggle protocols end?
After the heatwave. There will be further announcements through this Facebook group and on www.MennoPlaceLife.com

  3. Visiting other Residents – Starting today you can visit up to three residents in one suite. Keep your group consistent. Terrace East, Menno Home, Menno Hospital require pre-booked visits and all visitors to those buildings must wear a mask at all times.
  4. Booking a visit in Terrace East – Visitors to Terrace East are required to book their visit 48-hours in advance. You can book your visit online at MennoPlaceLife.com or by phone with Diana at (604) 853-2411 extension 2466.
