You’re Invited: Family Support Group
Family and friends from Menno Home and Menno Hospital are invited to our Family Support Group. This group will be led by a current family member who has previous experience leading support groups. We are hoping this group will grow over time and will benefit the members who attend.
When: Thursday, June 20, 2019 3:00-4:00pm
Where: Menno Hospital Conference Room (right near Hospital Reception)
A move to residential care involves many changes in lifestyle as life transitions from independent living to a shared living experience. This adjustment can take time for both residents and their loved ones. For some of you, the transition may be new, for others, you may have been here longer. As family members, you share similar experiences and you are not alone. Many emotions can arise by having a love one in residential care. We want all of our family members to feel supported by staff, as well as other family members. After the meeting, our hope is that you will feel encouraged, supported and strengthened to continue this ongoing journey.
Technology at The Apartments! Tablets are coming!
In June, Samsung tablets will be distributed to the residents at The Apartments! This is an initiative of Menno Apartments in partnership with Telus Innovation. Telus has provided the hardwiring that enables Primrose Gardens, the Terraces and Pavilion to have wi-fi throughout the buildings!
With wi-fi now available in all of The Apartments, Telus partnered with Menno Place to provide a tablet for each apartment suite!
Why tablets for seniors?
- They are easier to read than a desktop computer.
- They are easier to use – there is no mouse that requires muscle-control or dexterity
- They are more adaptable – seniors have a much faster familiarity with tablets than with desktop computers
- They improve communication – from typing to closed captioning and video calling
- They are fun!
Menno Apartments recreation team will be providing lessons for the residents in how to use the tablets. The Telus SeniorWise team will teach residents how to be safe on the internet, avoiding scams, fraud and identity theft.

Influenza Policy Extension
BC is experiencing a second (back-to-back) influenza A wave due to unusual late-season A(H3N2) predominance. Usually the Provincial Health Officer, in consultation with medical health officers, notifies that implementation of the Influenza Policy can end by late March. However, it is clear that influenza is still very much in circulation and impacting people and health care services. This is not the first time implementation of the policy has been extended into April because of ongoing influenza activity.
We ask that you continue with the guidelines as per the Influenza Control Program Policy, in that all health care workers are required to wear a surgical/procedure mask when in a patient care area during influenza season if you have not received and reported your flu shot. The policy will remain in effect until further notice from my office.
Prevention is key and we all play a role – Please continue to be very diligent with hand hygiene and other infection prevention and control measures, and be vigilant when you see patients/clients displaying signs that could indicate a viral respiratory infection. Swiftly preventing spread of infection to others is critical, and reporting suspect outbreaks as soon as possible will result in prompt management and control activities.
