HOME W2: OUTBREAK (declared 16/02/2022)

NEW COVID POSITIVE CASES = 0 resident

TOTAL COVID POSITIVE CASES =31 residents (since Feb. 8/22)

We are so pleased that there have been NO further COVID positive cases in the past 2 days. All but one of the residents have recovered from COVID. In our daily meeting with the Fraser Health Outbreak Lead, we discussed the possibility of residents who have recovered from COVID being taken off of isolation and droplet precaution. This was brought forward to the Medical Health Officer who has approved this, effective immediately. Residents on the north side of the unit who are symptomatic (0), have active cases of COVID (1) or who are recovered (17) will be no longer be in isolation. Those who have not contracted COVID will remain on droplet precaution / isolation. We are anticipating that this unit will be called off Outbreak if there are no new COVID cases in the next 48 hours. This is a hopeful possibility. At this time, only essential visitors are permitted.
Protocols:
  • Twice daily symptom screening for staff and residents
  • All residents isolated and on droplet precaution
  • Communal dining discontinued
  • Group activities discontinued
  • Staff to wear masks and goggles until further notice
  • Only essential visitors allowed.

UPDATES AND REPORTING:

With the high prevalence of COVID in the community, Fraser Health introduced new Scenarios for Protocols. This has impacted the complexity of reporting residents and staff who are COVID positive. As a result, we have made some changes to reporting:

  1. In the initial outbreaks, all COVID positive cases (both staff and residents) could be easily traced to the outbreak as the source of transmission. During this wave of Omicron, it is nearly impossible to do contact tracing with staff as it relates to transmission on the unit. With this in mind, we will no longer be reporting staff COVID positive cases unless they are the initial cases on the unit.
  2. The various scenarios for protocols have added layers of complexity to when the “beginning” of a COVID outbreak takes place. You will notice that there is a jump in the number of COVID positive residents on Home W2 today as we are now reporting not only how many residents have become COVID positive since the declaration of the outbreak, but also since the initial Scenario was declared. Our goal continues to be that we provide accurate and meaningful reports to you in order to clearly express the significance and ongoing nature of COVID positives on a unit.
  3. Unless an Outbreak is declared or ends, we will no longer be reporting on weekends. You can continue to expect updates Monday – Friday.

What is your risk of COVID-19 Hospitalization?

Check out this chart that was created by the BC Ministry of Health – download the PDF Worksheet here.

How to use the chart:

1. Identify the number of risk-conditions that you have from this list:

At-Risk Conditions – Chronic Disease Dashboard (BCCDC.CA)
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Cerebrovascular disease
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic respiratory disease (eg: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, pulmonary hypertension, bronchiectasis)
  • Diabetes
  • Down syndrome
  • Hypertension
  • Immunosuppression and immunodeficiency
  • Obesity (BMI >30)
  • Organ transplant
  • Pregnancy
  • Sickle cell disease
  • Substance use (eg: injection drug use, problematic alcohol use)
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders

Find more information on Risk Factors for Severe COVID-19 Disease: CLICK HERE

2. Find the appropriate cell on the chart that identifies:

  • # of risk conditions
  • your gender
  • your age
  • your number of vaccine doses

Examples:

A 55 year old woman with diabetes and 2 vaccinations has a 1.6% risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. If she were to get her booster shot, she would decrease her risk by 50% to 0.8%.

A 30 year old man living with substance abuse, hypertension and obesity (3 at-risk conditions) and zero vaccinations has a 25.2% risk of COVID-19 hospitalizations. He could reduce that risk to 3.6% with a full course of vaccinations (3 doses).

An 99 year old man with 3+ at-risk conditions and 0 doses of vaccine has an 83.7% risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. This could be reduced to 12.7% with a full course of vaccinations (3 doses).

Who is at greatest risk?

The highest risk for COVID-19 hospitalization is for the 80+ individuals who have 3+ at-risk conditions. This represents many of the people for whom we provide care at Menno Place.
