It’s Fire Safety Education Week at Menno Apartments.

David Janzen, Building Services & Emergency Response Coordinator, has been educating residents in each independent and assisted living buildings about what to do in case of a fire in their suite, and what to do if they hear fire bells.

We wanted to share the full notes that David went over at each lunch meeting and provide some visual awareness of where their emergency placard is in each building suite type.

If you have a loved one living in Menno Apartments, please feel free to go over this information and continue to make sure everyone knows what to do in case of a fire emergency.

Alarm types:

  • Did you know that there are two types of fire alarms in this building?
    • There is a smoke alarm inside your suite.
    • And there is a general building fire alarm bell.
  • The general building fire alarm system is monitored by an outside security company which will call the fire department if the fire alarm is triggered.
  • However, the smoke alarm inside your suite will not contact the fire department.

What to do?

Scenario 1: If you have a fire inside your suite:

    • Get out and close your door.
      • This contains fire and smoke and buys time for evacuation.
    • Activate the nearest red fire pull station (located by each stairwell). When pulled this:
      • Alerts security company which makes the initial 911 call.
      • Alerts others of a problem.
    • Notify your neighbors on your floor and call 911.
      • This second 911 call lets Fire Department know that there is a confirmed fire and will send more resources.
    • Exit the floor via the nearest safe exit or stairwell if mobile. Please do not attempt to take the stairs if you are normally unable to do so, this puts yourself and others at further risk.
        • Do Not Use Elevators
        • Fire department will use if safe.
    • Head to the nearest Safe Assembly Point if mobile
        • Indoors – behind a set of fire doors or the Dining room.
        • Outdoors – Living Waters Gardens Gazebo
      • If the hallways or exits are blocked with smoke or fire:
        • Stay in your room or a neighbor’s.
        • Close the doors and windows.
        • Seal the gaps around the entry door with any soft material. (Tape, Clothes, towels etc.
        • Call 911, let them know where you are and that there is smoke.
        • Make a “Help” sign and place on window.
        • Remain calm.

Scenario 2: If you hear the Fire Alarm bells

    • If you are mobile and are able to manage the stairs safely:
            • Evacuate via stairs to the nearest Safe Assembly Point.
              • Indoors – Dining room.
              • Outdoors – Living Waters Gardens Gazebo
    • If you are not mobile or cannot take the stairs safely:
      • Stay in your room, with the doors and windows closed and wait for further instructions. Firefighters will come and evacuate you if needed. Please do not attempt to take the stairs if you are normally unable to do so, this puts yourself and others at further risk.

If you have any questions or would like to have a deeper discussion regarding this or any emergency procedures, let either Reception office (Terrace East or Primrose Gardens) know and we will setup a meeting.
