Yarn Donations Needed for Prayer Shawls

For almost a decade residents and friends of Menno Place have gathered to knit or crochet prayer shawls. Each resident in long-term care receives a shawl as part of their welcome to campus. You can often spot residents in Menno Home and Menno Hospital going about their day with their shawl wrapped around their shoulders. Prayer shawls are also added to the carts of comfort items that are brought into the room of a resident when they have been declared palliative. We often hear how much these shawls are valued and appreciated.

We want to keep this tradition going but we need your help.

We are seeking donations of yarn that our volunteers will make into shawls.

  • We are looking for acrylic or acrylic blend yarn (4 or 5 weight is best).
  • Blue, green and purple are the most popular colours but other bright colours are welcome too.
  • Yarn for prayer shawls needs to be soft to the touch and thick enough to survive frequent washing.

If you would like to donate some yarn  please drop it off with any of the LEAs in the apartments or bring it to the main entrance of Menno Hospital. If you would like to give a financial donation toward the purchase of yarn please use the form below.

Receipt of and spending of donations is confined to Board approved programs and projects. If, in the opinion of MBS, it should become no longer practical or possible to use this gift for a purpose specified or restricted by the donor (for example, if the program to which it relates is restructured, oversubscribed, or discontinued), MBS will redirect the gift to another purpose where it is most needed, as determined by Board in its discretion.
